Why a Random Password Matters

Most account breaches don't come from clever hacking — they come from weak, reused, or predictable passwords being guessed or leaked in a data breach elsewhere and then tried against other sites ("credential stuffing"). A truly random password with enough length and character variety is resistant to both dictionary attacks and brute-force guessing, because there's no pattern for an attacker's software to exploit. SecureGen builds every password from a cryptographically secure random source, not a predictable pseudo-random formula, so each character is as unpredictable as a coin flip.

How SecureGen Generates Passwords

This tool uses your browser's built-in crypto.getRandomValues() API — the same cryptographically secure random number generator used by password managers and security software — to pick each character. Nothing is sent to a server: the entire generation process runs locally in your browser tab. You control the length (8–128 characters), how many passwords to generate at once (up to 10), and which character sets to include (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols). The strength meter estimates resistance to brute-force guessing based on the resulting entropy.

Choosing the Right Length and Character Set

Length matters more than complexity: a 16-character password built from just lowercase letters is often harder to crack than an 8-character password mixing every character type, simply because length multiplies the number of possible combinations exponentially. For most accounts, 16+ characters with all four character sets enabled is a safe default. For systems that still enforce short password limits, maximize whichever character sets are allowed and treat 12 characters as an absolute minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to generate passwords in a browser?▼
Yes. SecureGen runs entirely client-side using the Web Crypto API's crypto.getRandomValues() function, the same cryptographically secure random number source used by operating systems and password managers. No password is transmitted over the network, logged on a server, or stored anywhere — once you close or refresh the tab, it's gone unless you copied it.
How long should my password be?▼
16 characters is a good general-purpose default for most online accounts today. For highly sensitive accounts (primary email, password manager master password, financial accounts), consider 20+ characters. Many security standards now recommend favoring length over forcing complex symbol rules, since length has a much bigger effect on how long a brute-force attack would take.
What does the strength meter actually measure?▼
It estimates entropy — roughly, how many guesses a brute-force attacker would need to try on average before finding your exact password, based on its length and the size of the character set you selected. More entropy means exponentially more guesses required, which is why both length and character variety push the meter higher.
Can I generate multiple passwords at once?▼
Yes — set "Number of Passwords" to any value from 1 to 10 and SecureGen will generate that many independent passwords in one click, each using the same length and character-set settings. Use "Copy All" to grab the whole batch at once.
Should I use a password manager instead of memorizing these?▼
Yes, for anything beyond a handful of accounts. A password manager lets you use a unique, maximum-strength password for every site without needing to remember each one — you only need to remember the manager's master password. Generate the password here, then save it directly into your password manager of choice.
